Merkel offers support to Panama

German Chancellor Ángela Merkel Tuesday praised Panama for how it responded to the scandal which affected the country following the leak of documents to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

"Panama has taken the steps to correct issues and has accepted the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development," said Merkel, who met with President Juan Carlos Varela this week.

During a press conference, the German leaders said that Panama and Germany are working on an exchange of tax information agreement that is expected to go into effect in 2017.

German Minister of Foreign Affairs Stein Meier also welcomed the progress on the fight against tax evasion.

On April 3, the ICIJ disclosed millions of documents from the firm Mossack Fonseca and exposed the use of offshore structures by companies and personalities from around the world to hide assets and evade taxes.

Varela, who is accompanied by a number of other officials, is also expected to discuss transportation, tourism and energy issues while in Germany.
