Ulloa lauds selection of Lacunza as a cardinal

Temas:

Panama City Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa said today that the designation of David Archbishop José Luis Lacunza as a cardinal by Pope Francis is a "gift from God."

In a statement released today by the Archdiocese of Panama, Ulloa said that the appointment is a sign of the recognition of the church of the work being done in Panama.

Lacunza is the first cardinal from Panama, which has the oldest diocese in the Americas.

"We want to express our joy for Lacunza for his new service to the Lord," Ulloa said.

The designation was received with surprise and excitement. Lacunza himself found out about it when his sister, who lives in Spain, learned about it from the media. She immediately called him to tell him about it.

Pope Francis announced the new designations yesterday. In addition to Panama, the pope appointed new cardinals from Mexico and Uruguay from this region. Lacunza and the other new cardinals will be installed at a ceremony in Rome in February.
