Concerns raised about possible contamination from stranded cruise ship

An investigation has been launched into the situation.

Temas:

An investigation is being conducted by the Maritime Authority of Panama into possible mistakes made in the handling of waste by the owners of a cruise ship that ran aground near Coiba Island.

The cruise ship Star Pride, owned by Windstar Pride Ltd., ran aground Dec. 22 while the crew was maneuvering to anchor at the island.

The investigation is based on reports provided by companies that provided waste management services to the cruise line.

It is also investigating possible breaches in the International Convention for the Prevention of Sea Pollution.

That convention mandates that ships properly manage their waste.

The cruise ship has been stranded near the island since the accident. It will remain there until the investigation is complete. If violations are found, the company could be sanctioned.
