Court suspends contract with Selex

Selex is part of the consortium Finmeccanica.

The Third Chamber of the Supreme Court provisionally suspended the contract between the Italian company Selex and the government for the purchase of 19 radars for $125 million.

The ruling was presented by Judge Luis Fábrega.

On Aug. 5, Minister of the Presidency Álvaro Alemán filed a request with the court to void the contract due to irregularities in the deal, namely the fact that the radars don't work and the company may have paid kickbacks to Panamanian officials.

According to the minister, there was a hidden commission for $25 million in the contract that was paid to the company Agafea Corp., which has been linked to officials from the previous administration.

Minister of Public Security Rodolfo Aguilera said the decision is "good news" because a preliminary analysis of the evidence "has found that there are sufficient elements" to determine that there was economic injury to the state.

Aguilera, at a press conference, noted that the contract is also being scrutinized in Italy.
