Proposal made to ban Odebrecht from public projects

A petition to that effect has been sent to the comptroller.

A group of citizens has called on the government to suspend contracts it has with Brazilian construction company Norberto Odebrecht due to corruption allegations involving the firm.

In a letter to Comptroller Federico Humbert, José Chen Barria, Sandra Escorcia, Bolivar Pedreschi, Jorge Eduardo Ritter, Roberto Brenes, Ricardo Bermúdez, Fernando Aramburu Porras and Tomás Herrera, among others, ask for the termination of the contracts for line 2 of the Metro and the Colón urban renewal project.

"It is an internationally known fact that the company president and other senior executives of the Brazilian construction company Norberto Odebrecht are imprisoned in Brazil for the alleged involvement of this company in financial scandals," the letter said.

There are also allegations that the company used Panamanian shell companies to hide bribes paid by the firm.

The contracts awarded to consortiums including Odebrecht total more than $2.3 billion.

The letter also points out that Odebrecht has also been downgraded by credit agencies.
