Lavítola and Berlusconi sentenced to three years in prison

Temas:

The Court of Naples, presided over by Serena Corleto, has sentenced Valter Lavítola and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to three years in prison each for political corruption in Italy.

The two were convicted of orchestrating the fall of the Prodi government in 2008 through the payment of bribes to parliamentarians.

With this latest decision, Lavitola has accumulated five sentences totaling more than 10 years in jail. Two of those convictions are for corruption cases related to Panama.

This sentence is a lethal blow for Berlusconi's political career.

In addition, Lavitola faces other two processes having to do with Panama. One, being heard in Rome, is related to the alleged diversion of $25 million in bribes to Panama officials that were paid by defense consortium Finmeccanica. This trial will be convened Oct. 29.

Lavitola is also under investigation in the Court of Naples for the diversion of $20 million in bribes in exchange for the construction of modular prisons by the company Svemark. No trial date has been set.
