On Feb. 9 David Archbishop José Luis Lacunza will depart for Rome where he will be appointed the first cardinal from Panama. He will be accompanied by a delegation which includes Panama City Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa.

Lacunza, 70, reported that during his stay in the Italian capital, he will meet with Pope Francis, who will give him details on the position he will assume on Feb. 14.

He said that if the pope asks where he wants to serve, he will tell him that he wants to stay in the province of Chiriquí, although he reiterated that he is under the authority of the church.

Today, during the inauguration of a housing program in David, the archbishop said his focus will be on addressing poverty and income inequality.

"We cannot continue in this way," he said.
