Revenue from Panama Canal drops

The new locks contributed to 5 percent of the revenue.

Income from tolls paid by vessels transiting the Panama Canal, including those using the new locks, fell slightly during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

The tolls amounted to $1.933 billion, $61 million less than the $1.994 collected in 2015, according to preliminary figures released by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).

The new locks, which began operating June 26, contributed 5 percent to the toll revenue.

The ACP had projected revenue of $2 billion in tolls. Part of the decrease in revenues is attributed to the fact that the new locks came into operation in June and not in April, as expected.

In 2016 there were 13,114 transits, while there were 13,874 in 2015. There were 238 transits by panamax ships, or vessels too big to use the old locks.
