The $10 million helicopter ambulance that the Italian contractor Finmeccanica agreed to provide Panama for free to settle issues with a defense contract dating from the administration of Ricardo Martinelli has arrived.
The aircraft was presented in July at a ceremony held at the AgustaWestland aerospace factory, located in the northern Italian city of Vergiate. Vice President Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado attended that ceremony.
The donation of the aircraft was done to resolve issues in the defense contract that included allegations of bribes that added 10 percent to the cost.
The helicopter will be used in rescue and humanitarian aid missions. It is the first of its kind in Panama.
"It will be at the service of the Panamanian people," said Panama Ambassador to Italy Fernando Berguido, who negotiated the deal.
