Eduardo Peñaloza to resume duties

Temas:

Electoral Prosecutor Eduardo Peñaloza announced that he will return to his post today.

He explained that he decided to suspend his vacation, which has lasted for four months, due to the swearing in of Ceila Peñalba as his deputy Monday. Peñalba replaced José Félix González, who had been designated by Peñaloza to serve as director in his absence.

Peñaloza described the swearing in of Peñalba as an "assault on the electoral prosecutor" and "an attack on the institution."

He said he was willing to talk today with Peñalba.

"I can take care of that at 10 a.m.," he said, referring to the time he plans to show up at the office.

He also announced that he will not block an audit of the agency because he has nothing to hide.

Peñaloza faces two criminal complaints for abuse of authority and violation of the duties of a public servant related to the lack of investigations into the alleged use of state resources in the last campaign.

After being appointed by President Juan Carlos Varela on Feb. 2, Peñalba was sworn into office yesterday. The event was marked by controversy as José Félix González tried to physically prevent officials from the National Bar Association from attending the ceremony.
