Canal ends restrictions on boats

Temas:

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) reported today that it has ended its restrictions on the size of boats using the waterway that were supposed to start Sept. 8 due to the effects of a drought.

The institution explained that, although the level of Gatun Lake is still below normal for this time of the year, the amount of rain in recent days has made it possible to suspend the announced restrictions.

The ACP warned that restrictions could still be implemented if the weather changes. These restrictions have to be announced four weeks in advance to give shipping companies enough time to adjust their schedules.

The lack of rain has been blamed on the El Niño phenomenon. Forecasts estimate the phenomenon will last until the first quarter of next year.
