Cabinet meets in the Darién

Promises made to improve the provinces schools, hospitals and water systems.

President Juan Carlos Varela held a Cabinet Council meeting yesterday in Meteti, the Darién.

Accompanied by his ministers, he promised a new road to Yaviza, more schools and hospitals and the expansion of water systems.

The event was slated to start at 11 a.m., however it was delayed for three hours.

Varela arrived by helicopter shortly before noon, but went to a base of the national border service Senafront to discuss activities to combat illegal gold mining in the province.

Asked about ongoing corruption investigations, he said that this is a matter for "another organ of the state."

As he walked down the streets of the town, he chatted with residents and watched traditional dances being performed.

Finally he arrived at the Marcos Alarcón Educational Center for the meeting.

Before the meeting started, Varela met with indigenous residents to discuss their concerns about outsiders squatting on their land.

The meeting itself was attended by numerous dignataries from the region.
