University upholds decision to suspend professor

The general secretariat of the University of Panama (UP) sent a note to the Faculty of Law and Political Science to notify it of a decision to uphold the suspension of Professor Miguel Antonio Bernal.

In a letter dated Tuesday, UP Secretary General Miguel Angel Candanedo explained that the disciplinary process against Bernal has confirmed a March 11 decision to suspend the professor for a period of five years without a salary.

It instructed Law School Dean Gilberto Boutin to reassign his classes.

Bernal has said that the decision of the Academic Council is "illegal and arbitrary."

"I've been expelled," he wrote on his account on the social network Twitter. He also vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court.
