Varela says he will punish taxi drivers who block roads

The drivers are protesting this morning against Uber.

President Juan Carlos Varela warned Sunday that taxi and bus drivers who block streets will lose their license plates and operating permits. 

"Those who have a license or transport permit can not use it to close streets," he said. "It hurts to have to do this, but it is my responsibility as president to watch over social peace of the country." 

Drivers planned to protest against Uber this morning. Varela said that alternatives such as dialogue should have been considered first.

Julio González, director of the transit agency ATTT, issued the directive of the president, saying the blockage of roads will not be tolerated. 

A 24-hour strike on trunk and inland routes was organized by the San Cristóbal de Chepo Transportation Cooperative had also been reported to protest against pirate buses, but it was called off this morning.
