Transparency International asks for investigation into Odebrecht

The Panamanian chapter of Transparency International has called for an investigation into the activities of Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in Panama.

Today, Chapter President Ramón Ricardo Arias forwarded a copy of a La Prensa article about Odebrecht that appeared on Aug. 13 to Sixth Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Aurelio Oliver Vásquez. The article documents how Odebrecht used Panamanian companies to launder millions of dollars in bribes. It was based on information from Brazilian prosecutors.

It is not the first time that Arias has requested an investigation. He also called for a probe in March based on reports in Brazilian media about irregularities in the contract to build line 1 of the Metro. Odebrecht is also in line to receive the contract to build line 2. In all, the company has received contracts in Panama worth billions of dollars.
